Dr James Wee Liang Hao of Oxford Orthopaedics

Dr James Wee Liang Hao is a dual subspeciality Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with over 20 years of clinical experience. His practice covers Hip & Knee surgery as well as Foot & Ankle surgery, giving him broad lower limb expertise across both areas. He is also experienced in limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery for short limbs and severe deformities, with care guided by careful clinical judgement and the considered use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques where appropriate.

This breadth is built on a strong academic and surgical foundation. Dr James Wee obtained his Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S.) degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2005, where he was placed on the Dean’s List and awarded the Ivan Polunin Gold Medal. He later completed his postgraduate specialist training in orthopaedic surgery and went on to obtain Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (F.R.C.S. Edinburgh) in 2015.

Dr James Wee was subsequently awarded a scholarship for clinical fellowships in Hip & Knee surgery at Oxford University Hospitals, and Foot & Ankle surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the United Kingdom (UK). These fellowship experiences further strengthened his subspecialty training across both areas of lower limb surgery, shaping the specialist care he provides and helping guide the best suited treatment approach for each patient.

Hip & Knee Surgery

Dr James Wee is skilled in minimally invasive hip and total knee replacement (TKR) surgery, as well as the use of robotic platforms such as Mako, ROSA, and NAVIO to support greater accuracy. He is also experienced in Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) hip replacement surgery, which can offer quicker early recovery in appropriately selected patients.

Within his hip and knee practice, partial knee replacement (PKR) is an important area of focus for Dr James Wee. He received extensive specialist training in the procedure under the inventor surgeons of the Oxford Partial Knee System in the UK, gaining early exposure to the judgement and technical considerations that shape the best possible PKR outcomes. In appropriately selected cases, minimally invasive PKR can support faster recovery, less pain after surgery, and more natural knee movement compared with TKR. Today, this is reflected in his own practice, where he has one of the highest volumes of PKR surgery in Singapore.

As part of Dr James Wee’s dual subspeciality practice, his expertise in Foot & Ankle surgery encompasses sports injuries, complex trauma, degenerative conditions, and neurological problems. In this area, he is well versed in the use of arthroscopic, or keyhole, and MIS techniques, particularly in the treatment of recurrent ankle sprains, flat feet (pes planus), high arched feet (pes cavus), bunions and hammer toes, as well as foot and ankle arthritis.

This adds further breadth to Oxford Orthopaedics’ lower limb care, with specialist expertise that extends from the hip and knee to the foot and ankle. In turn, it supports more joined up assessment and treatment planning where movement, alignment, and function need to be considered more broadly.

Beyond clinical work, Dr James Wee is passionate about medical education. He was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Nanyang Technological University – Imperial College London), and served as the school’s Principal Lead for orthopaedic surgery, overseeing orthopaedic surgery related education matters across Singapore. He was also a Senior Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS). In addition, as a Faculty Member of the NHG-AHPL Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Programme, he has been active in postgraduate medical training, helping to train the next generation of orthopaedic specialists.

This commitment to education also extends to the wider profession. Dr James Wee has been invited to speak at international conferences due to his expertise in Hip & Knee surgery and Foot & Ankle surgery, and has served as an instructor at both local and regional surgical courses. He is published in peer reviewed scientific journals and has also been invited to be a journal reviewer, reflecting his ongoing contribution to education, academic exchange, and the refinement of surgical best practices.

Dr James Wee has a wide range of interests outside work. On weekends, he enjoys playing basketball and can often be found at his neighbourhood court. Beyond sport, he also enjoys quieter pursuits. He is an avid LEGO builder and counts himself among the ranks of AFOL (Adult Fans of LEGO), while jazz vocals played through an old-fashioned pair of Quad amplified Harbeth speakers offer another way for him to unwind. In a similar vein, when time allows, he also returns to photography, spending time behind the lens of his trusty Nikon DSLR, revisiting his younger years as an amateur photographer. As a foot and ankle surgeon, he has a natural appreciation for well-crafted footwear, reflected in his ever-expanding sneaker rack.

Hip & Knee Surgery and
Oxford Partial Knee Replacement

Oxford Orthopaedics had its genesis in Dr James Wee’s fellowship experience in complex revision total hip replacement and total knee replacement at Oxford University Hospitals, where he also developed a special interest in the Oxford Partial Knee replacement.

He received extensive training in partial knee replacement with the acclaimed inventor-surgeons of the Oxford Partial Knee System, and witnessed first-hand how minimally-invasive partial knee replacement resulted in less pain after surgery, with safer, faster and better recovery compared to total knee replacement. Patients also benefited from a more natural-feeling knee with better movement after undergoing partial knee replacement.
